What is UBD?

PLANNING
Briefly, it's a simple yet very brilliantly clever way of planning, where you at the START, you design in the understandings or "big ideas" that you want your students to have by the end of the unit. So simple, yet so meaningful for both you and your students: authentic learning!

ASSESSMENT
And assessment is therefore so elegantly simple: your students are assessed by how well they achieved the 'Understandings' that you designed in at the beginning!

BABY AND THE BATHWATER?
And no, you don't have to throw away your old units and start all over again; this backward-design process means that once you've decided on the Understandings (also known as Big Ideas, or Essential Questions), then you add in skills and lesson content. UBD has taken the USA by storm, and is now being adopted with enthusiasm by schools and teachers around the world.
